Forty-one percent of entering GVSU Freshman are first generation college students. They typically:

  • Are less confident in academic skills and ability to succeed in college
  • Have weaker social connections at school
  • Have much less certainty about ability to pay for college
  • Are more homesick
  • Have a lower first-year persistence rate
  • Have a lower graduation rate
